On the lookout for ways to increase engagement, Compassion International isn’t afraid to adopt new audiovisual technologies to create enhanced and dynamic concert-going experiences. When Zane King, artist relations for Compassion International, chatted with his neighbor about a CUE event, little did he know that the conversation would lead to the innovative implementation of the mobile-first Jeremy Camp concert experience. Compassion implements CUE and finds it a huge success.
In October 2017, CUE Audio was established with the aim of offering an offline, network-independent communications protocol that uses high-frequency, ultrasonic audio as an alternative to WiFi, cell service, and Bluetooth for short-range communications. The technology provided by CUE has gained widespread adoption in the NFL, NBA, and NCAA to synchronize tens of thousands of smartphones in-venue, thereby creating unique fan engagement experiences that would otherwise be impossible with WiFi, Bluetooth, or cellular infrastructure. CUE’s acoustic modem has also found widespread use as an IoT protocol and proximity detection mechanism. Currently, CUE’s technology is utilized by over 500,000 users each month, and it operates in over 100 major arenas and stadiums worldwide.

Below is a Q&A interview with Zane King, artist relations for Compassion International:
How did you come across CUE’s innovative technology?
I was introduced to CUE by my neighbor. He had noticed an Arkansas Razorback’s plate on my vehicle. He then showed me a recent event they had executed at a basketball game. I was immediately impressed with the technology.
What was your vision for this event after learning what their tools could do?
Because CUE’s technology was so impressive, I knew it was something I wanted to bring to my team to implement. I scheduled subsequent meetings with my team to explore how this technology might be useful for our ministry’s work in the Christian Music concert space. I wasn’t sure of the vision, but I knew it would add something new to the experience and make the Jeremy Camp concert very special.

What was the process of working with CUE and the event production company for the Jeremy Camp concert?
Compassion is partnered with both Jeremy Camp and Premier Productions. We found the implementation of the technology into the fan experience to be easy, intuitive, and effective. We were impressed by the fact that CUE implementation did not require additional staffing.
Did this create more work or stress, or was it simple to implement?
Implementing CUE did not create more stress. It requires a minimum amount of work for the production team, and once it is all operational even that becomes routine.
How did the concert come together?
These concerts were all in churches. The lighting and sound that Jeremy’s team carries are very professional and modern. Thus, it feels very much like a major production. This sets up well for CUE with respect to the lighting of the phone screens.
How did the CUE add to the concert-going experience?
Yes, using CUE absolutely created a new dynamic for the concert attendee. And it gives us a variety of ways to explore deepening our message with the audience. In this first effort, however, we focused more on just giving the attendee the creative side of the CUE product. In the future, we will consider methods on how we can implement additional messaging and moments of activation.

What were some of the benefits of implementing CUE?
The technology of CUE’s product is an obvious choice for those who work in large audience settings. The benefits are enormous. We believe we have only scratched the surface of how we can further engage our audiences with fun and uplifting elements while at the same time accomplishing a greater reach with our message.
Will you do another concert using CUE’s tech?
We will absolutely explore future options with CUE and how we can work with them to benefit our partners and concert-goers. It was a valuable experience and we’re excited about what the future holds.
